Uteshiya Medicare proudly holds the prestigious ZED Gold Certification, recognizing its excellence in quality manufacturing and sustainable practices.
In today’s competitive world, manufacturing excellence is not just about producing more — it’s about producing better. The Government of India’s ZED (Zero Defect, Zero Effect) initiative is a major step in promoting quality, efficiency, and environmental responsibility among Indian manufacturers.
🔹 What is ZED?
ZED stands for Zero Defect, Zero Effect — a visionary program launched by the Ministry of MSME, Government of India, to create a globally recognized and sustainable manufacturing ecosystem.
The idea is simple yet powerful:
- Zero Defect means manufacturing products that meet the highest quality standards with no defects, ensuring reliability, consistency, and customer satisfaction.
- Zero Effect means that while producing these products, manufacturers must ensure zero negative impact on the environment — reducing pollution, conserving energy, and managing waste responsibly.
Together, these principles help Indian industries become more competitive, clean, and credible on a global scale.
🔹 The Purpose of the ZED Certification Scheme
The ZED certification encourages organizations, especially MSMEs, to adopt best practices in quality and environmental management.
It aims to:
- Promote world-class quality manufacturing.
- Ensure resource efficiency and sustainable production.
- Reduce rejections, waste, and environmental harm.
- Prepare Indian industries to compete internationally.
The certification has three levels – Bronze, Silver, and Gold, representing progressive excellence in performance and sustainability.
🔹 The Meaning of the ZED Gold Certificate
Achieving the ZED Gold Certificate reflects the highest level of commitment to both quality and sustainability.
It signifies that the organization:
- Has robust systems ensuring Zero Defect production.
- Adheres to eco-friendly, energy-efficient practices.
- Meets or exceeds global quality standards.
- Promotes safety, innovation, and continuous improvement.
This recognition is not just a badge — it’s a promise to customers, employees, and society that the organization stands for excellence with responsibility.
🔹 Zero Defect and Zero Effect in Action
In practical terms, Zero Defect focuses on:
- Precision in design and manufacturing.
- Strict quality control and testing.
- Continuous skill development and process improvement.
While Zero Effect emphasizes:
- Reducing carbon footprint and waste generation.
- Using eco-friendly materials and technologies.
- Ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
Together, they represent the perfect balance between industrial growth and environmental care.
🔹 Why ZED Matters for the Future
The ZED initiative supports the national vision of “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat”, encouraging industries to produce world-class products sustainably.
It builds trust and credibility for Indian manufacturers in global markets and inspires a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
How the ZED Scheme works
- Enterprises register and pledge to follow the zero defect & zero effect principle.
- They are assessed/rated on many parameters: quality management, process automation, energy efficiency, waste management, safety, etc.
- Certification levels: Bronze → Silver → Gold (and in some earlier versions Diamond/Platinum) depending on how many parameters are satisfied and how mature the process is.
- The scheme offers financial assistance/subsidies for certification cost, hand-holding, technology up-gradation.
How many industries / MSMEs have joined so far
Here are some recent figures:
- As of October 2023, over 102,403 MSMEs had registered under the ZED scheme. Of these, 44,166 obtained Bronze certification, 234 Silver, and 231 Gold certification.
- According to another source, over 141,661 MSMEs had obtained Bronze certification, 391 Silver, and 415 Gold.
- Earlier, in Nov 2021, about 23,948 MSMEs had registered with intent to adopt ZED principles.
- In the state of Gujarat alone, 41,556 industrial units had been ZED-certified (68 Gold, 90 Silver, and 41,398 Bronze) by August 2024.
These numbers show growing uptake, but also that there’s still large potential for many more enterprises to join.
