New Era of Medical Implants

In the present 21st century new technologies are emerging every day and conquering the whole world. One such technology that finds its place in these technologies is 3D printing which is also known as additive manufacturing. The 3D printing technology finds its applications in various fields such as Aerospace, Automotive, Education, Robotics, etc., because it makes it easy to print complex 3d models instantly. It is also cost-effective.

From the previous 8 or 9 years, various new software and technology are being eveloped in the field of medical to create 3D models using patient scan data. These jobs are performed by Biomedical Engineers who create 3d models and patient-specific implants from the obtained models. Once a patient-specific implant has been created it’s very difficult and much costlier to manufacture them in a traditional way. Here, 3D printing technology comes into the picture where it provides an easy and cost-effective solution and also become a complete game- changer in the medical industry.

Some of the various types of 3D printing available are,

  • Stereolithography (SLA)
  • Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
  • Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)
  • Digital Light Process (DLP)
  • Multi Jet Fusion (MJF)
  • PolyJet
  • Direct Metal Sintering (DMS)
  • Electron Beam Melting (EBM)
